A Little Give and Take

Like most of you I entered the New Year with a sense of vigor and excitement. I formed intentions for my yoga practice, my business, my relationships, and my big picture goals. I was inspired and motivated to start my year strong. Unfortunately, my body was not on board with my mind. So, I got sick. Again.

I had a nasty virus that caused a fever spike prior to Christmas which made me miss quite a bit of work; a big part of my livelihood. Naturally, as soon as I felt better I jumped right back into work and ignored my slowly recovering energy levels. A couple days after ringing in the New Year my immune system took a hit again, but this time with a cold. I tried pushing through for two days until my body had enough. I finally took the hint and have been at home in bed for the last week, slowly recovering. I began feeling all sorts of sorry for myself as I lay in bed and scrolled through inspiring Instagram feeds of people basically doing everything I wasn’t. I was frustrated and mad at my body for not taking care of itself and doing its job.

Finally, after a combined two weeks of being sick in bed I realized that just like the practice of yoga, there was quite a bit of give and take in my situation. Yes, I was sick for a long time and had to miss work, but I was gearing up for something I have been dreaming of since I started teaching yoga nearly 5 years ago. I had to take a step back and give my body a break so I can be prepared to take the lead on my first yoga retreat in Maui, Hawaii.

So, as I prepare to co-lead the Maui yoga retreat, I am humbly reminded not to take my body for granted and enjoy the road that is leading me to my dreams. I’m not sure what 2018 has in store for me, but I am much more patient with the process towards my intentions for the future. It is after all, the lessons I will learn in 2018 that will prove to be the most worthwhile.

How can you approach the New Year with a little give and take?

Hi, I'm Lauren and I am here to support people to find freedom in being authentic and the power to carry that out in their lives and community. Writing is one way I like to explore that for myself. Here is my archive of reflections.
