Let the Creative Juices Flow

Creativity is not a state of being; it is a state of mind. Yes, you may be more creative whether due to nature or nurture, but imaginative thinking is just about connecting the dots. I remember my brother and I as kids being obsessed with coming up with new inventions and then of course feeling disappointed when we found out our genius was already out there in the world. Although we never successfully came up with a new invention, we were practicing our right-brained functions and exploring the art of creativity.

We may naturally gravitate towards a certain way of thinking, but our brains have the incredible capabilities to process information using both the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The left side of the brain is associated with logic, analysis, mathematics, facts, and words, while the right side of the brain is linked to creativity, imagination, intuition, arts, feelings, visualization, and rhythm. If you are not quite sure what side of the brain you gravitate towards, take this TEST. Even if you consider yourself to be more left-brained, it doesn't mean the road to creativity ends.

Here are 5 effective ways to help facilitate creative thinking:

1. Gravitate towards what inspires you:
  • Pick up a new book, watch an inspiring documentary, catch up with friends, listen to new music, and explore what your community has to offer
2. Write it down:
  • Ride out the random fluctuations of the mind like wave and see where it takes you. I have my best thoughts in the shower, the car, and right before I go to sleep
3. Get off your "Assana" :
  • Go outdoors where you can expect the unexpected. Go for a hike, meet new people, switch up your routine, and be bold. Do what scares you!
4. Find other people who share your interest:
  • I follow other yoga teachers on Instagram, read yoga articles and blogs that challenge my way of thinking, and try to take yoga classes from various studios and teachers.
5. Travel:
  • So important! Leave room in your budget for travel. It doesn't have to be a super glamorous vacation, but by taking yourself out of your usual element you can see things in a new light.

Hi, I'm Lauren and I am here to support people to find freedom in being authentic and the power to carry that out in their lives and community. Writing is one way I like to explore that for myself. Here is my archive of reflections.
